National Museums Scotland is one of the leading museum groups in Europe. With one of the largest and most diverse collections in the world, we are responsible for the acquisition, preservation and display of a substantial part of Scotland’s cultural, historic and national heritage.

Millions of local and international visitors enjoy our four museums each year, and we also introduce our collections to a much wider audience than can physically visit our museums through, touring exhibitions, loans, community engagement, digital programmes and research.

Over the past decade, we have invested over £110 million in our collections, our museums and the experiences we provide for our visitors. Alongside this, we have continued to transform how we communicate and engage with our audiences. This year, the continuing implementation of our Masterplan for the National Museum of Scotland has seen the opening of ten inspiring galleries of fashion, applied art and design and of science and technology. At the National Museum of Flight further investment has enabled us to make a step change in the visitor experience through the restoration of two historic hangers and creation of new displays.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a permanent appointment to the National Museums Scotland’s Collections Information team. Reporting to the Collections Information Manager, the Collections Information Officer will play a central role in supporting the Museum’s programmes of digitisation and collections information management.

As the successful candidate, you will have a degree in a relevant subject plus a postgraduate qualification in museum studies (or equivalent experience). You will have proven relevant work experience in a multidisciplinary collections information environment in a museum or similar institution.

You will have an excellent working knowledge of all aspects of policy, procedure and standards in museum collections management and extensive experience of the use of collections information systems to assist with the delivery of the Museum’s strategic priorities.

You will apply professional knowledge and judgement to provide effective advice and support to colleagues and deliver training.

You will possess strong project, time and staff management skills to deliver multiple projects and balance competing priorities, and be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook. Knowledge of, or experience with Adlib, the Museum's Collections information system, would be advantageous.

You will be an effective communicator with excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to influence and negotiate to build productive working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders, both within the Museum and externally at Scottish and International level.
