National Museums Scotland is one of the UK's leading museum services. Operating five museums and one of the largest multidisciplinary collections in the UK, it aims to be a world-class museums service that educates, informs and inspires. A major redevelopment and modernisation programme is currently being implemented across our organisation, including a £46 million redevelopment of the Royal Museum building. This investment will create new displays, enhance learning and public facilities and provide high quality visitor experiences.

Based at The National Museum of Scotland, you will manage and lead our teams from the latter stages of the development phases of our new galleries, Performance and Lives and Facing the Sea, to their installation. You will work collaboratively with colleagues from across the museum to ensure effective project management and delivery of the galleries. Additionally you will ensure the section’s webcontent needs are met for all galleries, provide management support for the Jean Jenkins digitisation project and manage the section generally.
You will have a degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject such as anthropology or history of art, and ideally a postgraduate qualification in Museum Studies, or equivalent. Relevant work experience in a museum setting is essential: expertise in Oceanic material or ethnomusicology especially relevant to the development of our galleries. It is vital that you have proven experience in project management, managing staffing and gallery development together with the communication skills necessary to work effectively within multi-disciplinary teams.
The provisional date of the selection event is Tuesday 19 January 2010.
National Museums Scotland is committed to being an Equal Opportunities Employer.
